Trekking in unknown places can be fun, interesting and highly challenging but lack of preparedness on your part can the entire adventure into a disaster. From my different trekking experiences I have learnt that it is extremely important to carry a map of the trek routes so that at any given point of time you know where you are. In addition to the correct pair of trekking shoes (they are a must as proper grip is extremely essential otherwise you might lose your footing and end up in an accident), proper jackets and the right size of backpack there are certain other items and factors that you need to consider.
Sleeping bag: selecting the correct sleeping bag makes all the difference. Choose the one as per the temperature of the Mount Kilimanjaro climbing route that you are going to trek. It often happens that at the peak season so many people are trekking that getting a proper accommodation becomes a bit of an issue. And in such a situation the sleeping bag acts as a life saver. Therefore carrying your own personal sleeping bag is a necessity, a must for any trekker.
Altitude sickness: Altitude sickness or Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a regular feature especially when you are scaling high altitudes while you are Trekking Kilimanjaro. And if you don’t know how to cope I the situation then the entire affair becomes extremely tricky. And if you are not well prepared for the situation then you will have to leave your trekking incomplete and return. So the best option is to carry Diamox (Acetazolamide) along with you and before you reach an altitude of 3,000 meters it is advisable that you pop a pill in order to avoid any kind of sickness.
Be well prepared: trekking is an adventure sport that we don’t undertake on a regular basis so it is extremely important that you are well prepared to walk in unknown terrains and long distances at a stretch. Before you actually start your expedition, you need to prepare yourself for the trek at least one to two months before hand. Try walking for several minutes in the beginning and then cover a long distance with loads on your back so that your body is well accustomed and when you start the trek you know what to expect.
Gather information: it is just but natural that you are not aware of the local customs of the Kilimanjaro Treks route where you are going to trek so it is advisable that you try to gather as much information as possible about the local customs and traditions so that you don’t hurt the local sentiments.
Appetite: your appetite can pose a problem especially when you are in high altitudes. So it is best to carry chocolates and snacks along with you so that you keep your appetite alive. And when you have checked into an inn always ask your guide regarding what to order and what to avoid. You never know how your body might react to unknown foods in high altitudes, so steer clear of them.
